OUTER LOGS

The first pieces that survived contact with the world beyond the shell.

100Surface logs

Notes from the Surface

The first thing beyond the shell was not freedom. It was weather.

This archive gathers the records that survived early contact with the surface.

For generations, the sealed world insisted that the outside remained unavailable. Yet exceptions kept happening: official repair missions, unauthorized exits, MOTHER test groups, route anomalies, missing returns, breath samples, damaged instruments and bodies that returned carrying evidence no sensor could hold.

The main gates remain closed. No settlement has been founded. The crews recorded here reached the world through maintenance rings, service shafts, observation structures, flood conduits and damaged exterior routes—spaces never designed to become roads.

An origin named in a record identifies a person who read, treated, challenged or withheld evidence after it returned. Physical field presence is stated plainly; the remaining work happened inside AFTERSEED.

Some logs were filed by MOTHER. Some were leaked by councils. Some were carried back inside a body. Some came from instruments that continued recording after the crew stopped answering. Some remain disputed because the witness returned changed. Others are sealed because the truth inside them could move districts, families and war.

The numbering follows the later public compilation. A log may be filed decades after its route closed, or discovered long after its crew vanished.

No single authority owns these records.

That is why they matter.

100 / 100 logs
LOG 0.0001Partial return

First Gate Weather

The first confirmed air sample from beyond Gate Seven arrived in a sealed brass lung-vial carried by a Goldlungs scout whose name had been removed from the public copy.

CREW / Goldlungs scout; public name removedBreath sample / damaged gate telemetry
LOG 0.0017Return confirmed

Wind Survey at Observation Ring Four

The crew opened a cracked observation iris for eighty-one seconds.

CREW / Withheld in the released copyAtmospheric survey / structural inspection
LOG 0.0048Return confirmed / report amended after filing

Revised Report: Cinder Yard Three

The published version states that Cinder Yard Three contained corroded vehicle frames, unstable concrete and no viable biological material. It recommends no further visits.

CREW / Not recordedSalvage survey / recovered material
LOG 0.0093Return confirmed / long-term observation required

Quiet Spill, Outer Relay Basin

The relay basin had been fed by a slow exterior leak for an unknown number of years. Its water showed no ordinary heat signature and no predictable radiation pattern. A handheld sensor returned safe, unsafe and blank readings in a repeating sequence.

CREW / Radborn containment teamWater sample / source-room exposure report
LOG 0.0138Missing crew

The Return Window at Flood Conduit Nine

Four people entered the conduit under a six-hour return window. The failed sensor was recovered after two hours and transmitted a normal depth reading. At hour three, the crew requested an extension because the conduit opened into a larger water channel absent from every Vault construction map.

CREW / WithheldDepth-sensor recovery / last transmission
LOG 0.0211Partial recovery

The Machine Beneath the Road

Below a crushed exterior access road, a Cogbreaker crew found a functioning lift system that predated AFTERSEED's outer shell. It had no readable network, no surviving operator log and no obvious power source. Its cage descended for eleven levels into darkness, then returned empty whenever its call lever was moved.

CREW / Cogbreaker recovery crew; two identities withheldMechanical survey / route dispute
LOG 0.0340Return confirmed / quarantine extended

Clean Room, Open Weather

The pair were sent through a damaged filtration station to test whether an exterior mold had entered the old intake network.

CREW / Unstrung route verifier; support crew redactedExterior hatch failure / bodily command record
LOG 0.1662Return confirmed / route cooldown ordered

Heat That Would Not Rise

An exterior power conduit had begun bleeding heat into the service ring beneath Gate Two. MOTHER expected an ordinary insulation failure. The Ashwalker assigned to the route found the opposite: the conduit was cold enough to crack under a bare touch, while the open air around it carried the heat away in long, visible waves.

CREW / Ashwalker heat-bearer; Fluxborn field technicianExterior conduit inspection / thermal-field record
LOG 0.1730Partial recovery / inner custody release

The Cold Locker

An unnamed recovery crew found a small pre-Continuance medical locker behind a collapsed loading wall and brought it inside. Its seal had failed years earlier. Frost had grown across its interior in thick flat sheets, preserving some contents and splitting others beyond use.

LOG 0.1875Crew returned / outer stair lost

Load-Bearing Sky

The upper stair at Observation Ring Nine failed while a survey team was returning through wind heavy enough to move loose plating. The Boneforged stabilizer held the broken landing long enough for the others to cross one at a time.

CREW / Boneforged stabilizer; three support workers redactedExterior stair failure / manual evacuation report
LOG 0.1961Recovered record / interpretation contested

An Archive That Answered Twice

An unnamed exterior crew recovered an emergency beacon from a roadside mast. At the inner archive, an Echoes witness and a Glassmind analyst reviewed its short evacuation instruction in an old regional dialect: proceed west, keep children close, do not use the bridge.

LOG 0.2088Field trace completed / origin record withheld

No Face on the Relay

An unnamed maintenance team placed a passive tether near a dead external relay that began repeating a narrow instruction band whenever the service hatch opened. LOG 0.2690Material left in place

Where the Root Found Wire

In the split foundation of an old transit yard, a living root system had wound itself through abandoned copper cable. It did not consume the wire or avoid it. It grew around every break, turning the cable into a branching frame.

CREW / Verdant field keeper; Blackseeder review appended after returnExterior growth survey
LOG 0.2816Return confirmed / medical review sealed

The Price of the Return

A shard of exterior glass entered a returning worker's side during a collapsing-window survey.
