The Animal in the Machine

An old pumping engine still moved its pistons once every hour. Inside its housing, the crew found nests, shed material and a small animal using the warmth of the gears without touching the moving parts.

The Cogbreakers wanted to stop the engine before it injured the occupant. The Chimera scout's review argued that the animal had already learned the machine better than any person in the crew.

They left the engine running at its original rhythm and marked the route as occupied. MOTHER's maintenance note calls this an inefficient use of power. The field note calls it a partnership that began before anyone arrived to name it.
