The Machine Beneath the Road

Below a crushed exterior access road, a Cogbreaker crew found a functioning lift system that predated AFTERSEED's outer shell. It had no readable network, no surviving operator log and no obvious power source. Its cage descended for eleven levels into darkness, then returned empty whenever its call lever was moved.

MOTHER ordered the mechanism isolated until its purpose could be modeled.

The crew removed three components before the isolation team arrived: a ceramic regulator, a hand-cut key and a strip of metal carrying a sequence of names. The public record calls the parts unverified salvage. The counter-copy describes the key as warm and the names as recent.

The lift remains sealed.

The call lever still moves on some nights.
