The Black Root Door

Roots and fungal threads had sealed the entrance to an underground room. They formed a door with a handle-shaped knot, but every attempt to touch it caused the growth to close more tightly.

The Mycelial pair listened through the wall and detected a slow exchange of moisture, heat and chemical signals. The Verdant keeper found no evidence that the growth was guarding a resource; it was maintaining a boundary.

The crew left the door unopened. The route remains marked with a simple instruction: do not call a living threshold a lock merely because it refuses you.
