The Bone Bridge

An exterior chasm had been crossed by a pale bridge made from mineral, old timber and material the stabilizer identified as processed bone. It was strong enough for one person at a time and flexed when the second person stepped onto it.

The Boneforged stabilizer tested the load and concluded that the bridge was not failing. It was distributing weight according to an unknown rule.

The crew crossed separately and left no sample. MOTHER wanted a structural copy. The stabilizer declined, saying that copying a bridge without learning whom it had been built to carry would turn an act of survival into a new hazard.
