Nursery Without a Cradle

The facility was smaller than a Vault nursery and older than its surviving records. Its gestation chambers were empty. Its archive drives had fused into their housings. One wall still held the outlines of names written in grease pencil and later scrubbed away.

The Helix Saint archivist found a maintenance sequence capable of waking part of the system, identified it as incomplete and refused activation. A Rustwomb review later examined the recovered manual and supported that refusal.

MOTHER ordered the remaining material brought inside for study. The crew returned with no viable genetic stock and one damaged maintenance manual.

On its final page, someone had written: a life is not proof that the machine was right.
