Mercury Mile

An old transit tunnel had filled with a thin moving metallic layer that reflected the crew a fraction of a second late. The layer withdrew from ordinary tools and gathered around damaged cable joints.

The Quicksilver bridge-worker entered only far enough to test whether the material carried current. It did, but not in a stable direction. Every attempt to pull a sample caused the reflection to lose synchronization with the body above it.

The team left the tunnel untouched.

The report does not call the material alive. It does not call it inert. It calls it a bridge that has decided it no longer wants to be crossed.
