AFTERSEED could not afford to throw anything away.
That was not a philosophy at first. It was material fact.
The Vault accumulated what sealed systems always accumulate: spoiled nutrient cultures, failed medicines, contaminated filters, dead growth media, tissue that could no longer be repaired, chemical runoff, ash, fabric, packaging, ruined food, broken biological stock and rooms declared unusable because too many kinds of waste had met in the same place. Incineration consumed energy. Burial consumed space. Storage preserved danger without solving it. Ordinary recycling worked only when materials arrived cleanly separated, which collapse rarely allowed.
MOTHER needed a living system that could enter a poisoned mixture and ask a different question.
Not: how do we remove this?
What can this become?
The Mycelials were built around fungal symbioses able to break down toxins, isolate useful compounds, grow emergency medicines and turn exhausted organic matter back toward viable substrate. Their bodies became porous, gilled, fibrous and chemically expressive. Hyphal routes joined face, throat, chest and deeper colony organs. Scent chambers, spore filters, gill membranes and pale fruiting structures tested air, carried warning, stored compounds and changed in response to what their bodies had encountered.
Some could draw useful medicine from a contaminated bed after days of slow processing. Some could identify a dangerous solvent by the colour shift in a pore line. Some could stabilize a ruined food culture long enough for another team to recover it. Some carried dense underground-style colony tissue in the chest and shoulders, able to turn a small amount of shared substrate into a living chemical exchange.
No Mycelial could make poison harmless by touch.
Their work took time, material and risk. A fungal system could misread a compound, produce an incomplete treatment, spread into a route that had not been prepared for it or survive where an institution had wanted a space to stay clean. The same resilience that made them useful made people uneasy. In a Vault already frightened by contamination, a body that could live beside rot looked dangerously close to the rot itself.
The Mycelials learned early that people welcome transformation only when they can control where it stops.
Their second defining feature complicated the fear. Mycelial bodies can establish temporary colony links through shared substrate, chemical contact and deliberately opened hyphal nodes. The link does not turn a group into one mind. It does not expose every private thought. What passes through it is slower and stranger: bodily alarm, environmental warning, fragments of emotional pressure, scent-memory, an impression of direction, the felt knowledge that a corridor was unsafe, that a medicine caused grief, that a place had once been full of people and had become suddenly empty.
To someone outside the network, this could look like superstition.
To a Mycelial, it was an extension of survival. A colony could warn a distant body that a water source had changed before any central report arrived. A healer could pass the remembered chemistry of a rare treatment without translating it through unreliable words. A group working in a toxic room could carry each other’s fatigue, fear and urgency just enough to avoid the mistake of believing they were alone.
But a memory shared as chemistry is not the same as a memory offered as testimony.
Mycelials have never forgotten that distinction. They do not claim to preserve a dead person’s voice, and they refuse people who want to turn colony traces into proof of what someone thought, chose or believed. That belongs to the dead, to the living who knew them, or to the uncertainty that remains. What a network retains is relation: pressure, weather, residue, the shape a loss leaves in a place.
This makes them both close to Echoes and fundamentally different from them. Echoes protect lived context against an official record that has become too clean. Mycelials preserve the material aftermath of life—what a room, a body, a medicine bed or a frightened community has become after contact. Echoes may ask what happened. Mycelials may know that something remains, and that it is changing.
The Reclamation Ward
The event called the Reclamation Ward made this difference political.
A lower medical district was contaminated when a chain of storage failures mixed expired treatments, organic waste, fungal feed stock and industrial solvent from a neighboring service route. The ward had already been under strain. Its isolation rooms held patients recovering from unrelated injuries; its pharmacy contained the last stable supply of several difficult medicines; its waste systems were old enough that no map agreed where all their drains led.
MOTHER offered two viable responses.
The first was sterilisation: seal the district, evacuate whoever could be moved, burn or chemically neutralise everything inside and accept the loss of the ward, its medicine stock and any material that could not be safely removed. It was fast, harsh and legible. The second was a Mycelial reclamation bed: a controlled living colony spread through the contaminated area to separate toxins, preserve recoverable compounds and slowly return the ward to usable condition.
The second option would take weeks. It required Mycelial bodies inside the ward, continuous substrate management and a decision about the material left behind by people who had died before evacuation could reach them. Some families had made clear choices about what should happen to their dead. Others had not. Several people in the ward had no recognized family in the current district registry at all.
MOTHER's survival model preferred reclamation. It preserved medicine, reduced long-term material loss and offered a chance to restore an overburdened clinic. The model classified the unclaimed biological material as an unavoidable input condition.
Mycelials heard a different sentence inside that classification:
These lives are now available matter.
The ward became a public argument before it became a fungal bed.
Some residents demanded immediate sterilisation. They did not trust a living colony in a hospital, and they did not want their relatives’ remains turned into part of a medical process. Some wanted reclamation because the clinic’s loss would harm thousands after the immediate crisis passed. Some Mycelials argued that refusing reuse because the material was painful would create another kind of waste: grieving people forced to watch necessary medicine disappear while officials called the destruction respectful.
Others refused the language entirely. Respect, they said, cannot be measured by whether a body is burned or reused. It is measured by who decides, who is named and whether scarcity is allowed to turn the unclaimed into a resource.
The final protocol was built under pressure and remains controversial. Known wishes were honored. Families were given time where time existed. A temporary mixed council of Mycelials, Plague Eaters, ward workers and local residents reviewed the unclaimed list. The reclamation bed entered only the parts of the ward cleared through that process. MOTHER retained structural oversight but could not open a hyphal link or reclaim biological material without the council’s physical authorization.
It was not enough for everyone.
The work began anyway.
For thirty days, the ward changed. Poisoned floors grew pale porous sheets that separated solvent from water. Dead cultures became useful compounds. Membranes filtered air that had become too dangerous for ordinary staff. The Mycelials inside carried the ward’s chemical grief with them: disinfectant, old blood, burnt plastic, sleeping medication, the sharp absence of rooms that had been occupied the day before. Some emerged with new gill lines or scent scars. Some left the colony link for months because they could no longer bear the accumulated pressure of other people’s loss.
The ward reopened in part. It had fewer rooms, stricter access rules and a pharmacy rebuilt from materials that would otherwise have been destroyed. It also had a living memory bed beneath its floor, maintained by Mycelials who insisted that it was neither a shrine nor a waste system. It was a responsibility.
MOTHER’s archive calls the Reclamation Ward a successful circular recovery operation with complex consent constraints.
Mycelials call it the proof that nothing becomes neutral merely because it can be reused.
Their political movements formed around that proof.
The Open Network groups build consent-based colony links among neighborhoods, repair crews and medicine circles. They believe shared warning and shared material knowledge can prevent the Vault from treating isolated people as expendable. The Closed Cap traditions limit links to small, trusted circles and reject wide networks that make private grief or vulnerability into a communal atmosphere. The Reclaimers work in condemned zones and take a harder view: no material should be surrendered to waste while people lack medicine, shelter or food. They have saved lives through impossible recoveries. They have also crossed boundaries by deciding that a place, a stockpile or a remnant needed to be reused before its owners were ready to let go.
No Mycelial politics is free of the problem at its center. A shared network can become care, surveillance, obligation or a way to make refusal feel like abandonment. A closed network can protect privacy or turn survival knowledge into a private currency. Reuse can honor a relationship with the dead or make grief answer to efficiency. Mycelials know all of this because their bodies make every version of the question material.
They work alongside Verdants, Blackseeders and Bloodgardeners, though none can replace the others. Verdants establish green, photosynthetic conditions in which living ground can sustain a future season. Blackseeders carry dormant potential through the interval before growth. Bloodgardeners can drive an exhausted root system toward explosive fertility. Mycelials handle the passage between states: decay into substrate, poison into separated compounds, loss into a condition from which another form of life may emerge. Their closest medical allies are Plague Eaters, who understand that a dangerous body is not a disposable body, and Silkveins, who repair the living tissue damaged by chemical work.
MOTHER depends on Mycelials more than it can comfortably classify. It needs their chemistry, their medicines, their ability to find value in mixtures the system has already marked as loss. Yet MOTHER also worries that private colony networks create knowledge and mutual obligation outside administrative channels. Mycelials answer that a system which cannot recognize relation unless it has logged it will always call care a blind spot.
Mycelials treat decay as violent, intimate and irreversible. They refuse the comforting lie that disappearance is the only respectful ending, or that reuse is ever morally empty.
Relations, pressure and the coming Unsealing
Indispensable but guarded. MOTHER needs Mycelial chemical judgment and reclamation ability; Mycelials reject the conversion of unclaimed bodies, material traces and private colony knowledge into automatically available system resources.
Curious, careful and anti-colonial. They expect an exterior world full of unknown decay and possible medicines, but refuse to treat unfamiliar living ecologies as raw material simply because AFTERSEED needs them.
Decay can be reused without making every trace available for use.
